Tomato News

Yes, here at Marge Land the gardening never stops (OK it stops for winter but you know what I mean), and the latest project is to grow some delicious tomatoes from seed. Retired Father has started them off for me and the chosen fruits are ‘Astro Ibrido’ tomatoes from an Italian seed company.

As you can see the seedlings are well on their way. Placed the very same south-facing windowsill I grew the chillies on (normally with a clear plastic cover on, removed for the photo), the seeds germinated in half the stated time; 6 days instead of 12 days. The tomatoes are already have their initial two ‘baby’ leaves formed and are looking nice and healthy.

I shall keep posting updates with the latest tomato news as it happens.

Quinoa (keenwah)

I heard about the quinoa grain a while ago. It is very high in protein and fibre, low in cholesterol, all fabulous and healthy etc. And you can use it instead of rice or pasta. Today I decided to give it a go. I followed the packet instructions (soak the quinoa, cook on moderate heat in twice its volume of salty water, and remove from heat and allow to soak up the water), and had a nibble …

Oh bleugh! 8O It tastes like the blandest nothing and has the texture of cardboard!

I have cooked some rice instead.
