This is my first time of contributing to a blog (wow). I am making your green tomato chutney as I type and happened to look at the rest of your site and was pleased to see that being jewish as well there are lots more recipes i can use. I have a very limited repertoire of dishes and this makes a welcome change to following Evelyn (Rose) again.
Marge, This is my first time to your site and I’m going to try the green tomatoe chutney. I have never had chutney before so I really don’t know what to expect. Looking over you recipes I noticed quite a bit of sweet ingredients. As I do not really care for sweets, I was wondering if you could suggest some alternative to brown sugar. Also if you wouldn’t mind, some ideals as to what you do with chutney, is it a condiment? Don’t mean to sound daft but in Golden, Co. it is not a common item.
The sugar is necessary when making chutney in order for it to set properly. You could use a third less if you wish and perhaps add a chopped cooking apple to the mix. Chutney is indeed a condiment and goes well with meat or chicken dishes, or simply add a blob to a cheese sandwich – delicious! I hope you enjoy your chutney making.
